First Coat

• Use the 12-inch taping knife to smooth and spread the compound evenly. Work in horizontal strokes, overlapping each pass slightly to avoid lines and ridges.
• Allow the first coat to dry completely (this can take several hours to overnight, depending on the product and environmental conditions).

Second Coat

• Lightly sand the first coat to remove any high spots or imperfections using fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge.
• Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove dust.
• Apply a second thin layer of joint compound using the same technique as the first coat. This coat can be slightly thicker to cover any remaining imperfections.
• Allow the second coat to dry completely.

Third Coat (if necessary)

• Repeat the sanding process after the second coat has dried.
• Apply a third coat if necessary to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. This coat should be the thinnest layer.
• Allow it to dry completely.

Final Sanding

• After the final coat has dried, sand the entire surface to achieve a smooth finish. Use fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth, professional look.
• Be cautious not to sand too much and expose the underlying layers.

Clean Up

• Remove all dust from sanding using a vacuum and damp cloth.

Priming (optional but recommended):

• Apply a primer to the skim-coated surface before painting. This helps to seal the joint compound and provides a uniform base for paint.

Painting

• Once the primer is dry, paint the walls with your desired paint color and finish.

• Work in manageable sections to prevent the joint compound from drying out before you can smooth it.
• Keep your tools clean throughout the process to avoid dried compound creating imperfections in the skim coat.
• Practice on a small area if you’re new to skim coating to develop your technique.
